There will be two services this weekend in Richmond County to remember those lost in war.

Dobbins Heights will host its annual Memorial Day Service at 10 a.m. Friday, May 24 at the Community Center.

The guest speaker this year is Leanna Rogers, president of the Greater North Carolina Chapter of the 9th and 10th (Horse) Cavalry National Association of Buffalo Soldiers.

The organization was established to honor the legacy of the first all-Black regiment of the U.S. Army.

The county’s veterans organizations will host their annual service at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 25 at Veterans Memorial Park, across from VFW Post 4203 in Rockingham.

Tom Ehlers, commander of the N.C. Department of the American Legion is slated to be the guest speaker.

Ehlers is a Navy veteran, serving from 1968-1972. He was elected state commander in June 2023.

The service will also include Musik Blyther singing the national anthem, a presentation of the colors by the Richmond Senior Army JROTC color guard, and 21-gun salute by the AMVETS Post 316 honor guard.
