ROCKINGHAM — An alleged would-be burglar is in a hospital after reportedly trying to break into a home Thursday.

According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a call Aug. 22 of someone trying to enter a home on McDonald Church Road.

Before arriving, the caller reportedly told dispatchers at the 911 Center that the male homeowner had fired several shots in an attempt to get the intruder to leave. When the person at the door reportedly failed to do so, the homeowner fired more shots.

The first deputy on scene reportedly found a male standing at the door with apparent gunshot wounds. The deputy then put the male on the ground and began administering first aid, according to the sheriff’s office.

The wounded individual was flown to a trauma center and was still undergoing treatment Friday afternoon, according to a press release.

The press release issued Aug. 23 did not specify if the male suspect was a teenager or adult.

The case was still under investigation as of 3:30 p.m.

The sheriff’s office says all findings will be turned over to the district attorney’s office following the investigation.

“This was an isolated incident and there is no danger to the community related to this incident,” the sheriff office said in the release.
