ROAD TO RING: Wrestling fundraiser to benefit wounded warrior hunting trip

ROCKINGHAM — The Silvertip Hunting Club is switching gears this year with one of its annual fundraisers.

Partnering with Atlantic Coast Wrestling, the club will be hosting a wrestling show Sept. 28 at the National Guard Armory in Rockingham, with proceeds going toward their annual Wounded Warriors Hunt.

Each year, the club takes four veterans, picked by the Special Forces Association, on a weekend hunting trip in the Norman area off of Capel Mill Road.

Kevin Porter previously told the RO that one reason the special forces vets are included is because the hunting grounds have been used for Robin Sage training since before the club was formed 30 years ago.

The hunt lasts from Friday through Sunday and the veterans are fed and given other supplies.

At the end of the trip, they usually leave with Yeti coolers full of hunting-related gifts and, if there are enough funds, a firearm for each.

In the four years prior, the club held a motorcycle ride at the Hide-A-Way Tavern, raising $3,200 in 2023 and $4,700 the year before.

One of the featured matches on the card for “Battle for the Warriors” is Champain against The Leathel Dragon James Tuner for the Jr. Heavyweight belt.

Champain has been wrestling since the early ‘90s, including stints in the WWE (formerly WWF) and ECW, as well as smaller regional promotions.

The card also includes a tag team match between the OG Tribe and Rockingham’s Trip Cautious with an as-yet-unknown partner. Cautious was a member of New Breed, a popular local tag team, but was double-crossed by his partner, Trey Walker, over the summer.

Walker, currently the South Atlantic States Champion will be facing Atlantic Coast Champion Cruze Bittle.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the bell rings at 7 p.m. General Admission is $10 and children under 8 get in free with paying adults.

Earlier this year, the local wrestling promotion WCEW raised $3,000 for the Richmond Senior High School baseball team.
