HAMLET — Police have charged a man who they say stabbed his uncle during a fight.

Officers with the Hamlet Police Department reportedly received a call about an altercation on Buttercup Drive around 7:45 p.m. Oct. 3.

Investigators say 57-year-old Lonnie Antonia Breeden got into a fight with his uncle, who was not named, and the uncle slapped him.

During the altercation, investigators say the uncle wound up on the ground with a 2-3-inch laceration on the right side of his neck. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Breeden was still at the scene when officers arrived, according to investigators.

Police charged Breeden with one count each of attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Breeden is being held in the Richmond County Jail on a $500,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 17.

Records with the N.C. Department of Adult Correction show Breeden was first convicted in Cumberland County of driving while impaired in 1995. His probation was revoked in early 1997, landing him behind bars for a month.

Breeden’s second conviction came in 1998 for violating a court order.

In 2002, he was convicted of another court order violation and DWI, as well as using profane, harassing or threatening language in a phone call.

Records show Breeden went back to prison for eight months in 2007 when he was convicted in Richmond County on the following charges: two counts of assault on a female; two counts of violating a protective order; and one count each of communicating threats, injury to personal property and resisting a public officer.

Breeden was incarcerated for another three months in 2009 for a conviction of assault on a female.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
