Gordon Eugene Dixon, 91, of Hamlet, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Aug. 2, 2024, at Richmond County Hospice Haven.

He was born June 7, 1933 in Richmond County, son of the late Howard Britton Dixon Sr. and Mellie Barfield Dixon.

Gordon proudly served in the United States Navy, aboard the USS Manchester. During his military years, he was stationed in several locations including Japan. Gordon spent many of his working years with Sara Lee Hosiery, with both the Sandhurst and Safie plants. He attended the Hamlet Church of God of Prophecy where he was involved with the church’s fried apple pies in different area festivals, including the Seaboard Festival in Hamlet. He was also a very integral part of the Helping Hands Food Bank for several years.

Gordon was a master carpenter by trade, building his own home and helping his brothers in “Dixonville” build their family’s homes as well. He could construct and build anything, including out-buildings, furniture, carports, just to name a few, especially when given his honey-do list from his wife, Joann, who preceded him in death in December 2023.

He was a loving, supportive husband for 66 years and was well-known for the term of “waiting on a woman,” where he would take Joann shopping and patiently wait for her every trip, whether at the grocery store, Walmart, or Hobby Lobby. Gordon and Joann enjoyed many years together at their beach house in Garden City Beach, sharing memories with their immediate family as well as their extended family and friends.

Gordon’s family was everything to him, especially his two grandsons, Steven and Michael, who knew him affectionately as “Granddaddy.” He dearly loved his wife, his daughters, and all of his family, with most of his nieces and nephews seeing him as a second daddy and called him Uncle Gordie. He was known to nickname everyone in his family — that is treasured today. He was a kind-hearted, caring man, also with a sense of humor, that will be dearly missed by everyone who knew and loved him.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joann McKinnon Dixon; brothers, Larry Dixon, H.B. Dixon, Deward Dixon, Alfred Dixon and Hayden Dixon; sisters, Beatrice Smith and Lib Pratt.

Left to cherish Gordon’s memories are his daughters, Sylvia Dixon and Annette Dixon and husband J.J. Butler, all of Hamlet; grandchildren, Steven Dixon, Michael Dixon and wife Corey, Crystal Dawkins, and Kristan Dunn and husband Patrick, all of Hamlet; great-grandchildren, Landon Dunn, Bella Peed, and Kelsye Smith and husband Bailey; brother-in-law, Billy H. McKinnon, and friend Pat Bankhead, of Rockingham; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2024 from 11 a.m.-noon at the Church of God of Prophecy, Hamlet.

The funeral service will begin immediately following visitation, at noon, with Bishop Steve Crews officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military honors.

At other times, the family will receive friends at the family home.

Memorials may be made to: Richmond County Hospice, 1119 N. U.S. Hwy. 1, Rockingham, NC 28379.

Harrington Funeral Home & Crematory is honored to serve the Dixon family.
