As part of the celebration of the 100-year anniversary of the Jefferson Center building serving the community, there will be a ceremony unveiling a time capsule that was placed in the cornerstone of the building when it was built.

When Roanoke invested in building the then Jefferson High School, they knew it would be an iconic and longstanding landmark for the City and used the occasion to catalog the life of the community at that time. This occasion marks a special time to recognize both how much Roanoke City has grown over the last 100 years as well as the ways the Jefferson Center building has grown in its service to the community.

The iconic facility first served the community as the city’s largest high school, graduating over 19,000 students.  In the last 30-plus years, it has been a space that houses local non-profit and for-profit organizations, hosts countless community events from weddings to graduations, and has presented nearly 2,000 performances to over one million attendees.

The ceremony will feature the unveiling of the contents of the time capsule.  Executive Director of Jefferson Center, Cyrus Pace, will share the initial findings of the time.  There will also be a time to hear comments from Roanoke City Mayor Sherman Lea on this historical and forward-looking moment.

This will be a public event, with a special invitation to community and City leaders.
