    High school roundup: Volunteer edges West Greene

    CHURCH HILL — Volunteer’s Shawn Cole scored on a ball that squibbed out on a misplayed corner kick from 40-plus yards with 10 minutes left to lift Volunteer to a 1-0 nonconference soccer win over West Greene on Monday night.

    The two teams battled until the final seconds in what coach Jeff Lukens called a “great team effort.”

    Peyton Castle, Evan Lukens and Cameron Cox dominated the offensive end of the field for Volunteer. The back line, made up Dashawn Booker, Garron Barnett, Nolan Amyx and Shawn Cole, played great for the Falcons.

    Jackson McLain earned the shutout in goal.

    Grainger 2, Volunteer 1

    CHURCH HILL — The Falcons, forced to play short for 65 minutes, lost a tough 2-1 District 2-AA decision to the Grizzlies on Tuesday night.

    The Falcons lost one of their top offensive threats to a red card and played short-handed for 65 minutes in the match.

    Cameron Cox scored Volunteer’s only goal on an assist from Brinley Buchanan while playing a man down.

    HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

    Volunteer 9,

    West Ridge 0

    BLOUNTVILLE — Connor Haynes was 4 for 4, scored twice and drove in three runs to lead Volunteer to a 9-0 victory over Class 4A West Ridge on Friday, April 5. The Falcons tagged West Ridge for 14 hits in the game.

    Greyson Dennis was 3 for 4 and drove in two runs. Isaiah Bowery was 3 for 4, scored three times and drove in a run. Austin Williams went 1 for 2 with a sac fly and drove in two runs for the Falcons. Brycen Feagins, Anthony Blasini and Gavin Hickernell also had one hit each for Volunteer.

    Haynes earned the win on the mound, giving up six hits in four scoreless innings with two walks and no strikeouts. Austin Williams threw three scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit.

    Cherokee 8,

    Morristown East 7

    MORRISTOWN — The Hurricanes banged out 11 hits and rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Chiefs held on for the 8-7 nonconference road win on Thursday, April 4.

    Manning Brooks was 2 for 4 and drove in two runs to lead the Chiefs. Jake Elliott was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI.

    Jacob Brooks earned the win, allowing four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. He walked five and struck out six. Noah Hunter threw 2 1/3 innings and earned the save.

    Union Co. 7, Cherokee 2

    MAYNARDVILLE — Union County’s Brady Stinnett threw a one-hitter to hold the Chiefs at bay to earn the 7-2 nonconference baseball win on Friday, April 5.

    Clay Wagoner had the Chiefs’ only hit. Union County, meanwhile, had 11 hits and took advantage of four Cherokee errors.

    Stinnett gave up just one earned run with three walks and six strikeouts in a complete game for the Patriots.

    Gage Adkins took the loss for the Chiefs. He threw 5 2/3 innings, allowed six runs (two earned) on nine hits, walked two and struck out five. Bryce Elliott finished the game, giving up one run on two hits with one strikeout in 1 1/3 innings.

    HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

    West Ridge 12,

    Cherokee 0

    BLOUNTVILLE — West Ridge scored eight runs in the first inning to roll to a 12-0 nonconference softball win over Cherokee.

    The Lady Chiefs did not manage a hit in the game.

    Grainger 6, Volunteer 4

    RUTLEDGE — The Lady Grizzlies scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and held the Lady Falcons to two in the top of the seventh for a 6-4 District 2-3A softball victory on Monday, April 1.

    Grainger had 11 hits to Volunteer’s eight. Rylee Smith led the Lady Falcons, going 2 for 3 with an RBI. Timber McLain, Addyson Fisher, Zetta Smith, Jenna Thomas, Sydney New and Averi Weston each had one hit for Volunteer.

    Katelynn Trent took the loss. She gave up six runs on 11 hits with one walk and three strikeouts in six innings.

    Allison Byrd homered for the Lady Grizzlies.
