ROGERSVILLE — The Volunteer Lady Falcons had a big afternoon at the plate Monday at Cherokee High School, defeating the Lady Chiefs 19-5 in the Hawkins County rivalry game to earn a District 2-3A victory.

“We came out and hit it tonight,” said Volunteer coach Jackie Strickler. “We haven’t been outside in weeks, and we’re starting to get a little healthier. We hit well all the way down the lineup. It was Rylee Smith’s first-ever game pitching, and I thought she did a good job. We just hit it, top to bottom. I’m very pleased.”

The Lady Falcons scored seven runs in the first inning. They had five straight singles by Jayden Ford, Bryleigh Salyer, Zetta Smith, Haley Russell and Abby Fisher. Jenna Thomas, Sydney New and Addyson Fisher all hit doubles. Averi Weston added another single.

The Lady Chiefs had a big first inning, too. Kaylee Cinnamon walked, and Hadley Ward hit a single. Kasie Bowman walked and Shelby Helton singled. Jada Davis hit a triple, and the score was 7-5 after one inning.

The Lady Falcons added two runs in the second, with another parade of singles. Salyer, Smith, Russell and Abby Fisher all singled, with Fisher’s hit driving in two runs. The score was 9-5 after two innings.

The Lady Falcons scored two more runs in the third. Weston singled, and Smith tripled. Russell added another single.

The Lady Chiefs went 3-up and 3-down in both the second and third innings. After three, the Lady Falcons were up 11-5.

In the fourth, the Lady Falcons scored one more run. Addyson Fisher and Ford hit singles in the inning. The Lady Chiefs got singles from Davis and Keircee Manis, but they couldn’t push the runs across.

In the fifth, the Lady Falcons got a double from Abby Fisher and a single from Thomas to add one more run and take a 13-5 lead. Two Lady Chiefs walked, and Bowman singled to load the bases, but they didn’t get the runs across the plate.

The Lady Falcons pounded in six more runs in the final inning. They had singles by Hadley Spears, Ford, Zetta Smith, Katelynn Trent, and Kaitlyn Pierson. Russell and Abby Fisher had doubles. The Lady Chiefs loaded the bases with a bunt by Manis and singles by Rachel Young and Cinnamon, but the Lady Falcons’ defense held them scoreless.

“They came out swinging bats in the first inning; we came out swinging in the first inning. They swung the bat the rest of the game, and we didn’t,” said Cherokee coach Kevin Helton. “We’ve got to be better, get some hits, be better on defense and keep fighting.”
