    PHOTO GALLERY: Lady Chiefs roll on senior night

    ROGERSVILLE — The Cherokee Lady Chiefs softball team played one of its best games of the year on senior night, defeating the Hampton Lady Bulldogs 21-0 on Friday. Seniors Jada Davis, Rachel Young, Kasie Bowman, Kaylee Cinnamon and Kennedy Dishner were honored before the game.

    Neither team scored in the first inning. In the second inning, the Lady Chiefs exploded. Shelby Helton led off with a single. Davis was hit by a pitch. Keircee Manis singled to load the bases. Campbell Owen walked to score courtesy runner Gracie Herron. Young drove in three runs. Cinnamon singled on a bunt to score Young. Dishner and Hadley Ward walked to load the bases again. Kasie Bowman singled and Helton walked. Davis hit a sac fly to score Ward, and Manis reached on an error. Owen singled to drive in a pair of runs and advanced to second on the throws. When the inning was over, the Lady Chiefs were ahead 9-0.

    The Lady Chiefs added one run in the third when a sacrifice fly by Helton scored Grace McGuire.

    In the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Chiefs took no prisoners. Manis and Campbell walked, and Young got on base with a bunt. Cinnamon walked to score Manis. Dishner then doubled to drive in two runs. Ward and Bowman drew walks, and Helton singled on a line drive to left field to plate two more Cherokee runs. Davis singled to load the bases. Five additional walks to Manis, Owen, Baylee Russell, Lindsey Blacketer and Herron all walked. By the time Hampton got out of the inning, the Lady Chiefs had added 11 more runs to grow the lead to 21-0. The game was called after the top of the fifth inning.

    Coach Kevin Helton said, “We’ve been waiting all year for a complete game. We played hard tonight. My hat’s off to my seniors; our five seniors played hard tonight. It was a good ballgame; it gives us a little momentum going into next week. We have a tough week next week — Monday, Tuesday and Friday. We’ll have to get after it then.”

    Owen finished the night 1 for 1 with four RBIs. She walked and scored three times. Helton finished the night 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Young, Cinnamon, Dishner and Bowman each drove in two runs.

    Dishner picked up the win, throwing four shutout innings and giving up just two hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Helton pitched the final inning with no runs, no hits, no walks and one strikeout. The Lady Chiefs finished the night with 13 hits and drew 16 walks.

    Claiborne 14, Cherokee 11

    Kennedy Dishner went 4 for 4 with a pair of homers and drove in five runs, but it wasn’t enough as Claiborne held on for a 14-11 District 2-3A win on Thursday (April 18) at Cherokee. Dishner homered in the first and the sixth innings.

    Shelby Helton doubled and drove in two runs for Cherokee, which also got a triple from Rachel Young. Kaylee Cinnamon and Young each had a pair of hits.

    Claiborne racked up 17 hits in the game and took advantage of four Cherokee errors to plate five unearned run.

    Cherokee will wrap up District 2-3A regular-season action on Friday (April 26) with a makeup game at Grainger. The district tournament is scheduled for May 2-8 at Claiborne.
