CHURCH HILL — George Horlander scored the game’s only goal with 1:56 remaining in the first half to lift the visiting Cherokee Chiefs over the Volunteer Falcons 1-0 in another District 2-AA soccer battle between the two county rivals on Thursday, April 25.

It was senior night for the Falcons with Diego Mejia and Nolan Amyx honored before the game.

The two teams battled throughout the game.

The Cherokee win forced a split in the competitive season series between the Hawkins County rivals. The Falcons outgunned the Chiefs 3-2 in a shootout after two overtime periods at Cherokee’s Mike Sivert Field on April 2.

“We’ve kept getting better this year,” said Cherokee coach Charles Windham said. “We’re losing eight seniors, so we’ll have to reset next year. It’s good to beat Volunteer. I’m proud of George Horlander, who scored the goal. He’s an asset to the program and a senior.”

The Chiefs also picked up a 6-4 nonconference win over Campbell County on Friday, April 26.

Horlander pulled off the hat trick with three goals in Friday’s match. Youssef Rhanimi added two goals and Peyton Albright one for the Chiefs.

    Looking ahead

The Chiefs will honor their seniors on Thursday, May 2, when they host Cumberland Gap in the final home game of the regular season. Pregame festivities will begin at approximately 6:10 p.m. with kickoff at 6:30 p.m.

Postseason play begins Monday, May 6. Greeneville will be the top seed in District 2-AA. The final tournament pairings have not yet been released.
