CHURCH HILL — Volunteer High School has launched a search for a new head coach for its girls basketball program following the resignation of Twin Lakes Conference co-coach of the year Caroline Laek.

Laek notified Volunteer athletic director Jeremy Bailey of her decision to step down on Monday.

“Due to health reasons, I am unable to continue as the girls’ basketball coach at Volunteer High School. Over the past eight seasons, it has been a privilege to coach the team and witness their achievements. I will always cherish the memories and the bonds formed with the players and staff,” Laek announced.

“During this transition period, I am committed to assisting the team in any way possible to ensure a smooth handover,” she said in a statement provided by the athletic department.

The opening will be posted on the Hawkins County employment website (hck12.net) in the coming days with plans to have a new coach in place before school is out for summer.

“We will greatly miss having Coach Laek leading our program, as she’s been a part of Lady Falcons basketball for a combined eight years. Last season, the Lady Falcons had one of the most successful seasons in school history under her leadership,” Bailey said.

“Coach Laek will remain at Volunteer as a teacher and has offered to serve as a mentor to the next coach for a seamless transition,” Bailey said. “She doesn’t leave the cupboard dry, as she’s already got the summer camps, practice schedule, and next season’s schedule completed. We wish her a healthy recovery, and she will always be a part of Lady Falcons’ basketball — past, present and into the future.”

Volunteer’s underclassmen gained valuable game experience throughout the 2023-24 season and learned what it takes to compete at a high level within the Twin Lakes Conference and Region 1.

“I want to express my gratitude for the opportunity to serve as head coach and for the support received throughout my tenure. I wish the team continued success in all their future endeavors,” Laek said.

Anyone with any questions regarding the position can contact Bailey at jeremy.bailey@hck12.net or call the school.
