ROGERSVILLE — The Cherokee Lady Chiefs soccer team opened its season Tuesday evening, hosting the Sullivan East Lady Patriots. The visitors held the Lady Chiefs scoreless, winning 4-0.

Anna Nagel, Reagan McCrosky, Paisley Patrick and Valerie Velazquest each had one goal for East in the nonconference matchup. Cadence Cross and Gracie Cox each picked up an assist.

The Lady Patriots got on the board with 10:26 to go in the first half. They scored again before halftime to lead 2-0 at the break. They added a goal early in the second half and scored again as the final horn sounded.

Cheyenne Peaks and Sarah Doss combined for the shutout in goal for the Lady Patriots.

Despite the opening-day loss, Cherokee coach Charles Windham has high hopes for his young Cherokee team.

“We have a good team. I think they have potential. They are one on the best teams I’ve had in a while. They’re young. We’ve got a good-sized team. I think we’ll do okay,” Windham said.

Members of the 2024 Lady Chiefs’ soccer team include seniors Faith Carpenter, Kyndra Smith and Jaylin Christian; juniors Alexia Barrett, Zoe Walker, Amari Newman, Kendrick Langston, Madison Strahan and Jenah Windham; sophomores Madalynn Collins, Ynocente Lebario, Keyley Kersey, Sarah Silcox, Genevieve Barger, Jamisonn Williams and Alyvia Stanley; and freshmen Gabriella Hause, Autumn Spears, Riley Newman and Emily Stambeck.

The Lady Chiefs host Cocke County on Thursday (Aug. 15), Cosby on Monday (Aug. 19) and open District 2-AA play against Claiborne on Tuesday (Aug. 20) in Big Red Valley. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. each night.

Cherokee travels to Volunteer on Tuesday, Aug. 27, for the first of the fall’s Hawkins County rivalry games.
