    High school roundup: Lady Falcons blank Grizzlies

    RUTLEDGE — The Volunteer Lady Falcons opened their season with a 2-0 shutout of Grainger on Thursday in the District 2-AA soccer opener for both teams.

    Kendall Stapleton and Emily Walker scored for the Lady Falcons, who recorded five shots on goal.

    Volunteer’s Khloe Sanders had four saves for the clean sheet in goal for the Lady Falcons.

    Volunteer hosts Morristown West in its home opener on Tuesday (Aug. 20) at 6 p.m. The Lady Falcons travel to David Crockett on Aug. 22 and to Daniel Boone on Aug. 26. They’ll host county rival Cherokee on Aug. 27 in Church Hill.

    Cocke County 7, Cherokee 1

    ROGERSVILLE — The Lady Red handed the Lady Chiefs a 7-1 nonconference loss on Tuesday at Mike Sivert Field in Big Red Valley.

    Cocke County improved to 2-0. Cherokee is 0-2.

    The Lady Chiefs hosts Cosby on Monday (Aug. 19) in another nonconference bout at 6 p.m. They’ll open District 2-AA play at home on Tuesday (Aug. 20) against Claiborne County.

    Cherokee travels to Volunteer for the soccer version of the Hawkins County rivalry game on Aug. 27 at 6 p.m.

    ROGERSVILLE — Cherokee got a trio of 37s from Marshall Seal, Aden Phipps and Porter Owen to edge Sevier County and Morristown East on Thursday at McDonald Hills Golf Course.

    Three Chiefs — Caleb Owen, Gage Adkins and Carson Waters — each shot a 42 to round out the scoring, which saw Cherokee finish with a team total of 153. Sevier County came in at 156 and Morristown East at 157.

    Other Chiefs on the course included Landon Elkins (48), Clay Wagoner (51), Cole Allen (45), Braxton Markham (52), Kenton Henard (54), Ledger Helton (50), Parker Travis (46), Grant Morelock (47), Levi Stamey (44), Luke Price (55), Balian Gilbert (54) and Keeton Riley (67).

    Sevier County (92) defeated Morristown East (109) in the girls’ match. Cherokee does not have a girls’ team this season.

    KINGSPORT — Volunteer took a pair of tough losses at Crockett Ridge on Thursday.

    D-B’s Blake Adams shot a 35 to claim medalist honors and lead the Indians to a 152 team score to edge Tennessee High’s 155. Senior Austin Williams led Volunteer with a 37. Brock Collier turned in a 40, and Cameron Cox and Kain Cornett each shot 42 for Volunteer’s 161.

    Others on the course for the Falcons (5-3) were Jackson McLain (45), Lucas Laughlin (42), Aiden Miller (40), Owen Miller (50), Colton Miller (49), Jonah Williams (57), Charlie Barton (46), Parker Mowell (55), Coleton Bellamy (45) and Noah Lane (60).

    Defending state champion D-B, led by medalist Aliezah Robinson’s 35, won the girls match with a 76. Tennessee High was second (81) and Volunteer third (92).

    Zetta Smith led Volunteer (4-4) with a 45. Kathryn Geise shot a 47 to round out the scoring. Other Lady Falcons on the course included Addyson Fisher (56) and Kinsley Cassidy (55).

    Volunteer coach Jim Whalen said the team played well overall and gained valuable experience.

    “We played at Crockett Ridge, where our district tournament is at, so it was a great learning experience for us,” he said.

    Volunteer travels to Elizabethton on Monday (Aug. 19) and faces Sullivan East at Tri-Cities on Wednesday (Aug. 21) and West Ridge at Warriors’ Path on Thursday (Aug. 22). The conference tournament is Aug. 28 at Warriors’ Path.
