    CHURCH HILL — Morristown West outshot Volunteer 6-1 in nonconference girls soccer action on Tuesday to ruin the Lady Falcons’ home opener.

    Senior Kendall Stapleton knocked in Volunteer’s lone goal on a deflection and scrap in the box.

    Volunteer (1-1, 1-0) will travel to Washington County for its next two nonconference battles, at David Crockett on Thursday (Aug. 22) and at Daniel Boone on Monday (Aug. 26) before returning home to host county rival Cherokee on Tuesday (Aug. 27). Game time is 6 p.m. each day.

    Claiborne 3, Cherokee 0

    ROGERSVILLE — Lexi Heinis scored two goals and Izabelva Estep another as the Lady Bulldogs blanked Cherokee 3-0 in District 2-AA soccer action on Tuesday.

    Lily Rosson recorded the shutout in goal for the Lady Bulldogs.

    Cherokee also dropped a 7-1 decision to Cosby on Monday.

    The Lady Chiefs (0-4, 0-1) travel to Church Hill on Tuesday (Aug. 27) to face the Lady Falcons in a county rivalry match. They’ll also visit Cocke County on Thursday (Aug. 29). Both matches begin at 6 p.m.

    HIGH SCHOOL GOLF

    Sullivan East

    BLOUNTVILLE — Senior Austin Williams shot a 1-under 35 to lead Volunteer to a conference win over Sullivan East on Wednesday at Tri-Cities Golf Club.

    Cameron Cox added a 39, Jackson McLain a 40 and Brock Collier at 42 for a Volunteer team score of 156 to East’s 173. East was led by Will Carrier’s 37. Josh Durham (41), Karson Stafford (45) and Ethan Casey (50) rounded out the Patriots’ scoring.

    Other Falcons on the course included Aiden Miller (46), Kain Cornett (56), Colton Miller (50) and Charlie Barton (52).

    Volunteer’s Addyson Fisher shot a 47 to earn medalist honors and lead the Lady Falcons (97) to victory over East (106). Teammate Zetta Smith shot a 50. Also on the course for the Lady Falcons was Kathryn Geise (55). The girls improved to 5-6 on the season. Hayden Pierson shot a 48 to lead the Lady Patriots.

    The Falcons and Lady Falcons will play the conference tournament at Warriors’ Path on Wednesday (Aug. 28). It marks the halfway point in the high school golf season.

    Volunteer will host its annual “Archie Par 3” tournament on Aug. 30 at Bays Mountain Golf Club. Hole sponsorships and tee times are still available.

    Elizabethton

    ELIZABETHTON — Cameron Cox shot a 39 to earn medalist honors and lead Volunteer (161) to wins over Elizabethton (170) and David Crockett (178) on Monday at the Elizabethton Golf Course.

    Austin Williams turned in a 40 and three Falcons (Jackson McLain, Brock Collier and Lucas Laughlin) shot 41s to collect the 161 team score for Volunteer. Other Falcons on the course included Kain Cornett (49), Aiden Miller (45), Charlie Barton (54) and Colton Miller (52).

    David Crockett got a 42 from Kadence Ball to win the girls match with a team score of 94. The Lady Cyclones shot a 99. Addyson Fisher (52) and Zetta Smith (54) combined for a 106 for Volunteer. Other Lady Falcons on the course included Kathryn Geise (56), Josie Sewell (58) and Kinsley Cassidy (56).
