KINGSPORT — The Region 1-AA Tournament, originally scheduled for Monday, Sept. 30, is now set for Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Ridgefields Country Club.

At stake for competitors is a trip to the TSSAA state golf tournament. In both girls’ and boys’ competition, the regional championship team and the top three individuals (not on the winning team) will advance to the TSSAA Division 1 Class AA boys’ and girls’ state golf tournaments Oct. 10-11 at the Sevierville Golf Club.

Hawkins County will have one team and two individuals competing, with their tee times ranging from 9-10 a.m. on Wednesday, according to the latest information available (as of Sunday, Sept. 29). All of the boys will start at the No. 1 tee, while the girls will start at the No. 10 tee.

Volunteer’s Austin Williams shot a 77 in the District 1-AA tournament last week at Ridgefields to earn one of five individual spots in the boys’ field. He’ll tee off at 9 a.m. in a group that includes Science Hill’s Will Wells, Tennessee High’s Owen Jones and Morristown West’s Jace Collake.

Cherokee, the District 2-AA boys’ runner-up, will have its whole team in action. Marshall Seal, who tied for medalist honors last week with a 74 at the Morristown Country Club, will be the first of the Chiefs to tee off at 9:20 a.m. He’s in a group that includes West Ridge’s Wyatt Cochran, Morristown East’s Hunter Worth, who tied for medalist honors last week, and Grainger’s Lane Seals.

Cherokee’s Aden Phipps tees off at 9:30 a.m. alongside West Ridge’s Jayden Foster, Morristown East’s Blake Johns and Sevier County’s Grady Smelcer. The Chiefs’ Carson Waters tees off at 9:40 a.m. alongside West Ridge’s Bo McGee, Morristown East’s Tryvn Beam and Seymour’s Baylor Creswell. Cherokee’s Caleb Owen tees off at 9:50 a.m. alongside West Ridge’s Raiden Collier, Morristown East’s Brett Carden and Greeneville’s Bryce Guinn. Cherokee’s Gage Adkins tees off in the final boys group at 10 a.m., with West Ridge’s Fletcher Henritze, Morristown East’s Ian Hurst and Sevier County’s Beau Brannon.

“The course at Morristown Country Club usually eats us alive, so I was happy with how they played,” said Cherokee coach Kelli Ann Lawson, whose team finished just one stroke behind District 2 champion Morristown West. “It’s never easy. Everybody has a bad hole or a bad shot. You’ve got to make sure you don’t let it get to you.”

That’ll be the key for the Chiefs, Lawson said, in their first competition at Ridgefields. The team worked to get a practice round in over the weekend. But for most of the Chiefs, it was their first look at the course where District 1 competed just a week ago.

“The key for us will be for them to keep their composure if they hit a bad shot. They have to remember that’s all it is. You can’t change what’s already happened. You can’t change the holes you’ve already played. One hole will not ruin you, unless you let it,” Lawson said. “You’ve got to be able to keep on trucking. I think most of our guys have realized that.”

Science Hill (286), Tennessee High (308) and West Ridge (310) earned the District 1-AA boys’ team berths. Morristown West (324), Cherokee (325) and Morristown East (331) earned the District 2-AA boys’ team berths.

Science Hill’s Paule Haire was the District 1-AA boys’ medalist with a 67 at Ridgefields. Cherokee’s Seal and Morristown East’s Worth tied for District 2-AA boys’ medalist honors with a 74 at Morristown Country Club.

Individual qualifiers from District 1 and their scores were D-B’s Blake Adams (70) and Jaycob Fowler (73), Elizabethton’s Bryson Hardin (76), Volunteer’s Williams (77) and Sullivan East’s Will Carrier (78). The individual qualifiers from District 2 and their scores were Grainger’s Seals (78), Sevier County’s Smelcer (79), Seymour’s Creswell (82), Greeneville’s Guinn (83) and Sevier County’s Brannon (83).

On the girls’ side, the only Hawkins County golfer in action will be Volunteer senior Zetta Smith. She shot a 94 in the District 1-AA tournament last week at Ridgefields to earn one of five individual spots in the regional tournament.

Dobyns-Bennett (165) won the District 1-AA girls’ title with Tennessee High (177) second and Science Hill (178) third. Greeneville (156) won the District 2-AA girls’ title with Seymour (196) in second and Sevier County (202) third.

D-B’s Aliezah Robinson was the District 1-AA girls’ medalist at Ridgefields Country Club with a 74. Greeneville’s Kylee Renner was the District 2-AA girls’ medalist at Morristown Country Club with a 76.

Individual qualifiers from District 1 and their scores were Crockett’s Kadence Ball (79), West Ridge’s Daisy Kizer (87), Elizabethton’s Callie Mosley (93), Volunteer’s Smith (94) and West Ridge’s Ashlyn Chesser (99). Individual qualifiers from District 2 and their scores were Cocke County’s Jeslyn Suwardika (85), Northview’s Rylee Rowell (97), Morristown East’s Kensey Helton (104), Northview’s Addie Mayfield (105) and Morristown East’s McKinlee Hamilton (108).
