MIDDLESBORO, Ky. — Each week, we invite readers to share their best shots featuring individuals and/or teams from Hawkins County. Any sport, any age group, any level.

This week’s featured photos highlight outstanding performances at the Battle of Cumberland Gap by athletes from Kelly’s Heroes Isshin-ryu Karate Dojo in Rogersville. The photos were submitted by Kim Henson.

Cody Shanks of Kelly’s Heroes won the men’s lightweight division in kumite and went on to capture the men’s kumite grand championship at the Battle of Cumberland Gap held Saturday, Oct. 5, in Middlesboro, Kentucky.

Kelly’s Heroes’ Dillon Williams took first place in the 16-17-year-old division in kumite, won the youth kumite grand championship and placed first in kata.

In the 9-year-old division, Chase Moles placed second in kata and second in kumite.

In the seniors division, Silas Gibson placed second in weapons and first in kumite.

Kata (forms) and kumite (sparring) are known as two of the three Ks that comprise the foundation of traditional karate training; the other is kihon (basics).

Share your shots of the week featuring Hawkins County teams and athletes, in any sport at any age, by emailing the Review’s sports editor Carmen Musick at carmen.musick@therogersvillereview.com.
