Thunderstorms are expected to rumble over parts of Northern California, bringing with them an elevated risk of wildfires.

There was a 10% to 15% chance of isolated thunderstorms on Monday afternoon and evening over the Shasta County mountains, according to the National Weather Service.

“Threats include lightning, brief heavy rain, gusty winds and possible fire starts,” the agency said via X.

The weather service advised people to avoid the tops of hills and open fields, as well as trees and other tall objects.

They should also stay away from water and avoid beach picnic shelters, the agency said.

The forecast also called for breezy onshore winds to blow over the Northern California region on Monday, with gusts ranging from 15 to 25 mph.

The “strongest winds will be through the Delta and across the mountains,” the service said on X. “By tomorrow, winds will still be breezy at times but weaker compared to today.”
