A police officer has been charged after he was accused of attacking his “now pregnant girlfriend” in “a series of violent incidents,” California prosecutors say.

The San Jose police officer, 31-year old Timothy Hackney , was arraigned on felony and misdemeanor charges Wednesday, Aug. 13, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office said in an Aug. 14 news release.

Hackney “is currently on administrative leave,” according to prosecutors.

In an emailed statement to McClatchy News, Acting Chief Paul Joseph said “these allegations are painful to learn, knowing our officers dedicate their lives to protecting victims,” adding that if the allegations are true, he will “never wear a San Jose badge again, full stop.”

Hackney’s charges stem from a series of incidents that began more than a year ago, according to prosecutors.

During one of the incidents in 2023, Hackney fired “his duty weapon” at the ceiling while his girlfriend and their young child were home, prosecutors said.

Afterward, he told his girlfriend, “I missed,” according to prosecutors.

While the couple was on a trip in 2023, Hackney’s girlfriend threatened to call police, prosecutors said. Hackney slapped the phone from her hand to stop her, prosecutors said

The girlfriend fled and drove to a nearby restaurant, where she called police using the business’s phone, according to prosecutors.

“She hung up the phone before speaking with the police, but there is a record of the emergency call,” prosecutors said.

Most recently, Hackney is accused of carrying his girlfriend to their bedroom to prevent her from leaving their home on June 7, prosecutors said.

He “covered her mouth and nose with his hand to stop her from screaming,” prosecutors said.

Hackney again tossed her phone away from her so she could not call 911, according to prosecutors.

At his arraignment, Hackney was charged with “a felony county of willfully discharging a firearm with gross negligence, two misdemeanor counts of domestic violence battery, one felony count of false imprisonment and a misdemeanor count of maliciously removing or obstructing someone’s wireless device,” Bay Area News Group reported.

“Domestic violence is a terrible, destructive crime and all perpetrators must be held accountable — badge or no badge,” District Attorney Jeff Rosen said in the release.

Hackney, who has been out of jail since posting $66,000 bail after his June 13 arrest, was “granted supervised release with GPS monitoring,” Bay Area News Group reported.

If convicted, he could face jail time, prosecutors said.

If you are experiencing domestic violence and need someone to talk to, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline for support at 1-800-799-7233 or text “START” to 88788.
