Gov. Gavin Newsom plans to announce on the Democratic convention floor Tuesday the California vote that gives Kamala Harris enough delegates to once again be declared the party’s presidential nominee.

Harris is already the nominee, thanks to a virtual roll call earlier this month. But a roll call of the states is a long-held convention tradition, and Democrats plan to take up much of Tuesday’s program with the state by state tally..

The convention has about 4,700 delegates. It takes a majority to win, which should be no problem for Harris. The roll call usually proceeds alphabetically by state. It’s expected that when it’s California’s turn, the state will pass and then later be recognized when it’s time to put Harris over the top.

Newsom plans to briefly speak about Harris.

“It’s a full-circle moment,” said Newsom spokesman Nathan Click.

They’ve known one another for three decades, dating back to when they were up and coming San Francisco politicians.

Their careers have been on roughly parallel tracks. Harris was elected San Francisco district attorney in 2003. Newsom, who had been a San Francisco Supervisor, was elected the city’s mayor the same year.

Harris was reelected four years later. So was Newsom.

She then won her bid for attorney general in 2010. Newsom ran and won for lieutenant governor. Harris ran for and won a U.S. Senate seat in 2016. Newsom ran for and won the governorship two years later.

Newsom is not currently scheduled for a formal floor speech during the four-day convention. He plans a series of media interviews while he’s here and visits to delegation breakfasts to tout Harris’ campaign.

Harris is scheduled to give her convention acceptance speech Thursday night.
