This ‘modern marvel’ was built as famous architect’s vacation home. Now it’s for sale

An estate that was built by a famous architect is a “modern marvel” — and has landed on the desert real estate market in Santa Fe, New Mexico, for $1.695 million.

But this isn’t just your run-of-the-mill vacation destination. It’s a rare eco-friendly treat that was designed by an architect known for his geometric and theatrical designs: Myron Goldfinger. And this precious desert flower was actually built to be his personal escape from the world.

“Nestled on a ridgeline in the exclusive Los Caminitos Subdivision, the residence is set on over 28 acres of rolling hills and Pinon Forest,” the listing on Sotheby’s International Realty said.

“Praised in the New York Times as the ‘Monumental Modernist Architect of Modernist Homes,’ Goldfinger, renowned for his grand sculptural buildings, considers this ’modest vacation home’ one of his finest creations. The property offers breathtaking, panoramic views in every direction and includes two separate legal lots.”

Built in 1996, the one-bedroom, two-bathroom isn’t so secluded that its owners will be completely isolated from society. It’s within walking distance for a Four Seasons Resort, the listing says.

Inside the 2,100-square-foot structure, a fascinating blend of southwest flavor and art deco collide with an open floor plan. There’s even an upper loft that can be accessed via a ladder.

The home is a grand reflection of the type of artist Goldfinger was.

Mr. Goldfinger designed his homes by amassing basic shapes — half-circles, blocks, triangles — into dramatic sculptural statements that seem both modern and ancient, as if a Roman palace had lost all its ornamentation but otherwise escaped the wear of time,” The New York Times reported.

The listing is held by Matt Sargent.
