This Mexican restaurant is closing after 43 years in North Sacramento

Ramona’s Comida Mexicana will close on or about Sept. 30 after more than 40 years in business, the Mexican restaurant just north of Garden Highway announced on social media earlier this week.

Ramona and Roland “Ronnie” Jufiar opened Ramona’s in 1981 at 2251 Northgate Blvd., and quickly had a hit on their hands. People crossed the American River for the loaded super burrito, which cost just $2.69 when The Sacramento Bee profiled the restaurant in 1988.

Ramona’s kept offering inexpensive, down-home favorites such as asada burritos (now $4.69), carnitas quesadillas ($5.69) and chile colorado plates ($14.09), even after the namesake matriarch’s death due to cancer 17 years ago.

Roland is 86 now, though, and ready to call it a career.

“From our family to yours, thank you for being part of our restaurant’s legacy. We are grateful for every moment and every customer who walked up to our window,” his closing post read. “Though this is a bittersweet farewell, we look forward to the next chapter with fond memories and a sense of fulfillment.”
