Cockroach infestation closes Sacramento County pho spot. What else did inspectors find?

    By Angela Rodriguez,

Sacramento County health inspectors closed a local pho restaurant due to a cockroach infestation.

Meanwhile, Huckleberry’s, Black Bear Diner, Fire Wings and other eateries received yellow placards for safety violations ranging from improperly stored food to a cockroach infestation.

A yellow placard signals two or more major violations, according to the Sacramento County Food Inspection Guide. These are typically corrected or mitigated during the inspection.

A red placard signals “imminent danger to public health and safety” and suspends the health permit until violations are corrected. This could include, but is not limited to, major vermin contamination.

In contrast, a green placard means a restaurant passed the inspection.

The county conducts roughly 14,000 inspections a year, and 97% of all restaurants pass their inspections, spokesman Ken Casparis previously told The Sacramento Bee. About 1% of inspections result in a closure.

Here are the results of Sacramento County food facility inspections for Sept. 12 through Wednesday, Sept. 18, as of Thursday afternoon:

Sacramento County inspectors close restaurant due to cockroaches

Pho Real , 25004 Blue Ravine Road, Suite 121, in Folsom, had two violations on Wednesday, Sept. 18.

Sacramento County health inspectors closed the eatery after discovering cockroaches.

Inspectors found a total of six live cockroaches throughout the restaurant at the kitchen entrance from the dining area, on the wall above the dishwasher and behind the three-compartment sink.

The restaurant was also cited for improperly stocked bathrooms.

Rather than providing customers toilet paper in the dispensers, inspectors said, toilet paper was stored above the dispensers inside both restrooms.

As of Thursday, Sept. 19, the facility had not yet undergone a reinspection.

Sacramento County restaurants cited for violations

The following Sacramento County restaurants had violations the week of Sept. 12 through Wednesday, Sept. 18, resulting in a conditional pass.

Only the dates of violations are listed. Due to the conditional pass and receipt of yellow placard, a reinspection was or will be conducted within 24 to 72 hours of the inspection. The reports are linked.

The dishwasher didn’t have any sanitizer residual after running for four cycles and only reached 108 degrees.

There was slime in the ice dispenser of the soda machine, and several areas, such as the ceiling and preparation tables, showed signs of neglected cleaning and debris buildup.

Jang Su , 3643 Bradshaw Road, Suite J, in Sacramento, had six violations on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

During the inspection, the restaurant faced citations for improperly stored rice and fried eggs lacking required discard times.

Additionally, food containers were found improperly stored on the floor.

Panda House , 2022 Broadway in Sacramento, had 10 violations on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Residue was found beneath the fryer as well as on the kitchen sink, prep cooler, stove and microwave.

Priya Indian Cuisine , 3101 Zinfandel Drive, Suite 134, in Rancho Cordova, had 12 violations on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

Inspectors found an open container of soaked rice near the three-compartment sink, contaminated by water splashing from a partially closed dish machine.

Additionally, an employee skipped the sanitizing process for metal skewers.

The inspection also revealed that food handler cards were unavailable for review, and employees were drinking next to the food preparation area.

A pan of frozen or semi-frozen curry was left unattended, thawing at room temperature near the exit door.

Several areas, including hood filters, metal racks, floors and dish machines, lacked regular cleaning and maintenance.

There was “no sign of an active infestation,” the report said.

Raw pork was found thawing in a bucket in the middle of the kitchen.

Inspectors cited several other issues, including a lack of the front counter hand sink and kitchen sink lacking. There was diluted soap in the dispenser and partially blocked access due to empty boxes.

Egg rolls, onions, pooled eggs and bean sprouts were stored at improper temperatures.

Other violations included missing food handler cards for two employees and personal food stored over retail food. One of two ware washing sink faucets was unable to dispense hot water due to a missing handle.

Inspectors also found residue in the refrigerator, microwave area and cooking equipment.

Fire Wings , 5250 Sunrise Blvd. in Fair Oaks, had 11 violations on Wednesday, Sept. 18.

The restaurant was cited after an employee failed to wash their hands and change gloves after handling a broom before returning to food prep.

Inspectors found improperly stored cheese sauce and garlic butter, and one employee was observed reheating the cheese sauce incorrectly in a microwave.

Additional violations included a blocked hand-washing sink in the bar area and the presence of black slime and debris around the floor sink and soda machine.

Sacramento County inspectors discovered three dead cockroaches in the storage area near the back door, along with gaps exceeding a fourth of an inch around the rear exterior door.

The kitchen’s hand-washing sink was missing both soap and paper towels. One restroom lacked paper towels, while another had an empty dispenser. A bar of soap was also noted in the customer restrooms.

The facility failed to provide sanitizer for cleaning equipment and utensils, and employees were unable to present their food handler cards.

Additionally, various food items — including tomatoes, nuts, herbs and yogurt — were improperly stored.

Grease and food debris were accumulating around the cook’s line.

Inspectors found four plastic-wrapped containers of pulled pork in the walk-in cooler that were improperly cooled after being cooked five hours earlier.
