Two people were arrested after a plane carrying a “large” amount of drugs made an emergency landing on a highway, California police say.

The plane landed on State Route 76 shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, the Oceanside Police Department said in a news release.

At the time, two people were aboard the single-engine Piper PA-28 , the Federal Aviation Administration reported.

Neither was hurt during landing, according to police.

The pilot told police they made the emergency landing due to “engine failure.”

While officers were searching the plane, they found “a large quantity of narcotics,” according to police.

Subsequently, the plane’s pilot and passenger, both from Oceanside, were arrested on counts of “illegal transportation of narcotics,” police said.

The FAA said it is investigating the incident.

Oceanside is about a 40-mile drive north from San Diego.
