Two suspects accused of taking about two dozen Stanley cups from a retail store Wednesday were arrested by Roseville police officers.

“Apparently, we had very thirsty thieves due to the heat,” the Roseville Police Department said Thursday in a social media post.

Officers were called to Dick’s Sporting Goods about 10 a.m. Wednesday for a report of a theft, police said online. Loss prevention officers shared images of the suspects’ vehicle, which police said had “obvious” damage to its grill and a paper license plate.

Based on the vehicle’s description, officers caught up to the suspects and eventually arrested them on Interstate 80. The suspects were taken into custody after a short foot pursuit.

“Even though it is hot out, we urge you to STAY HYDRATED… but legally please!” police said.

The intense craze around Stanley cups — in which enthusiasts wait for releases of new colors and styles akin to a fashion company unveiling a new collection — came into the local spotlight earlier this year when Sacramento woman was accused of stealing about $2,500 worth of Stanley cups in January. Those were also reportedly stolen in Roseville across multiple businesses, including Dick’s Sporting Goods.
