Bear with cubs wanders into home and charges 74-year-old, Colorado officials say

A black bear and her three cubs wandered into a home where she attacked a 74-year-old man in Colorado, officials said.

The attack happened at about 8:30 p.m. Oct. 3 in Lake City , Colorado Parks and Wildlife said in a news release.

The bears wandered into the home after opening a sliding glass door that had been partially cracked open, officials said.

Residents heard a loud crash when the animals came into the home.

A 74-year-old man tried to use a chair to direct the adult bear out of the home, but the adult bear charged him, officials said.

It knocked him into a wall, stood over him and clawed him, officials said.

He suffered “significant wounds” to his head, neck, arms, lower abdomen, shoulder and calf, officials said.

The residents locked themselves in a room while the three cubs were still in the home.

A deputy was then able to haze the animals out, officials said.

“It’s certainly lucky we didn’t have a fatality, because it was close,” wildlife officer Lucas Martin said in the release.

Wildlife officers killed the adult black bear and her three cubs because they had become habituated, officials said.

“When we have multiple sows with multiple cubs in town and conflict is occurring based on the ongoing availability of human food sources, it creates a very complex situation to mitigate,” Martin said. “Unfortunately, cub bears that are taught these behaviors by their mother may result in generations of conflict between bears and people.”

Lake City is in southwestern Colorado.
