A woman driving on a remote Southern California highway died when a thrown rock smashed through her windshield, highway patrol officers reported.

The fatal incident took place on Highway 138 near Highway 18 west of Victorville at 12:10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, the California Highway Patrol said in a news release.

Officers and emergency crews tried to revive the woman but she was pronounced dead, the agency said.

A passenger told officers the woman was hit by a thrown rock, the highway patrol said. A search of the area failed to find anyone.

Another vehicle was hit by a thrown rock nearby on the night of Sunday, Oct. 6, officers said. Investigators believe the incidents may be connected.

They ask anyone with information to call 323-259-3200.

Victorville is about an 85-mile drive northeast from Los Angeles.
