    2 big high school events will block roadways in Elk Grove this week. What you need to know

    Motorists should expect afternoon lane closures and detours as two high schools take over Elk Grove streets in celebration.

    Elk Grove High School, the city’s oldest , begins its homecoming parade through the streets starting at 12:45 p.m. Friday. The Thundering Herd’s varsity team will take to the field against the Laguna Creek Cardinals at 5 p.m.

    According to the city, drivers can expect lane closures along Elk Grove Boulevard and Elk Grove-Florin Road as students march in celebration of this annual tradition.

    The following streets will have lane closures:

    ▪ Valley Oak Drive at Elk Grove High School to Vista Grande Way

    ▪ Elk Grove-Florin Road in both directions at Elk Grove High School to Elk Grove Boulevard

    ▪ Elk Grove Boulevard in both directions from Elk Grove Florin Road to Williamson Drive

    ▪ Melrose Avenue

    ▪ Southside Drive

    Police will use traffic controls and detours during the parade, which is expected to end by 3 p.m.

    The following day, starting at 10 a.m., Franklin High School will host the 12th FHS Invitational Band Review , an annual fundraising event for Franklin’s band program that invites other Northern California high schools to compete for the best band.

    The event will shut down the following roads:

    ▪ Franklin High Road from the entrance of the Franklin Library to Coop Drive

    ▪ McLean Drive, Jefjen Way and Clairina Way at their intersections with Franklin High Road

    Whitelock Parkway will remain open for motorists, the city said. The competition is expected to conclude at 3 p.m.
