An Elk Grove man is accused of driving while intoxicated early Monday in a two-vehicle crash that killed another man in Sacramento.

Alvin V. Chand, 46, appeared for his arraignment hearing Wednesday afternoon in Sacramento Superior Court. Chand faces one count of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

Chand was being held without bail at the Sacramento County Main Jail. He was booked into custody about nine hours after the fatal crash, and police initially said he faced a homicide charge. That charge, however, had been removed from the jail log. Prosecutors only filed the manslaughter charge against Chand.

The judge scheduled Chand to return to court Tuesday to review his case and for the court to determine whether to set a bail amount in his criminal case.

The crash was reported about 12:45 a.m. Monday near Sunmeadow Drive and Franklin Boulevard, the Sacramento Police Department announced late Tuesday.

Police said authorities found a man suffering with life-threatening injuries in one of the vehicles involved in the crash. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene.

The man who died in the crash was identified as Daniel Lee Jennings, 54, of Sacramento, the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office confirmed Wednesday.

Police said in the news release that officers detained the driver of the other vehicle in the crash, later identified as Chand, who “displayed objective signs of intoxication.” Chand was taken to a hospital for medical treatment before he was booked at the jail

Detectives from the Police Department’s Major Collision Investigation Unit, along with crime scene investigators, took over the investigation.
