Two face drug charges after K9 sniffs out stash in I-5 traffic stop in Sacramento County

A man and woman are looking at drug trafficking charges and $1 million bail after an alert Sacramento County Sheriff’s dog sniffed out a cache of methamphetamine during an I-5 traffic stop Tuesday.

Arrested were Edy Hector Garcia, 34; and Quendi Nereida Fernandez-Molina, 28, Sacramento County Sheriff’s officials said Friday in detailing the bust along Interstate 5 and Hood-Franklin Road in south Sacramento County.

Both are being held in Sacramento County custody on suspicion of possessing and transporting controlled substances, say jail records. Their first court appearance is set for Oct. 17 in Sacramento Superior Court.

As the Sheriff’s drug sniffing dog went to work, alerting to a suspicious scent, deputies say passenger Garcia ran from the vehicle, but was quickly captured.

Authorities found more than 94 pounds of methamphetamine stowed in trunk along with cocaine and cash inside the vehicle.

Sheriff’s detectives were working in a joint highway enforcement task force with California Highway Patrol and Placer County District Attorney’s investigators at the time of the traffic stop.
