The Kings made a move to improve their shooting Wednesday with the addition of veteran forward Doug McDermott.

A league source told The Sacramento Bee that McDermott has agreed to a one-year deal with the Kings, confirming a report from ESPN’s Shams Charania.

McDermott, 32, is a 6-foot-6, 225-pound small forward who is entering his 11th NBA season. He adds to Sacramento’s wing depth and should compete for a backup role behind DeMar DeRozan.

McDermott came out of Creighton as the 11th overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft. He averaged 8.9 points while shooting 47.1% from the field and 41% from 3-point range over his first 10 seasons with the Chicago Bulls, Oklahoma City Thunder, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks, Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs.

McDermott had his best season with the Pacers in 2020-21, averaging career highs of 13.6 points and 3.3 rebounds. He averaged 11.3 points in 2021-22 and 10.2 points in 2022-23 for the Spurs.

In February, McDermott returned to Indiana in a three-team trade that sent former Kings guard Buddy Hield to the Philadelphia 76ers. McDermott appeared in 64 games for the Spurs and Pacers last season, averaging 5.5 points while shooting 41% from 3-point range.

The Kings signed McDermott a day after their preseason shooting woes continued in a 117-114 loss to the Utah Jazz at Delta Center in Salt Lake City. The Kings shot 42.9% from the field and 26.3% from 3-point range while falling to 0-4 in the preseason.

Kings coach Mike Brown believes his team is capable of shooting much better, but Sacramento is last in the league in preseason 3-point shooting at 25.2%.

The Kings now have 14 players on standard NBA contracts with one open roster spot as they prepare for the start of the 2024-25 NBA season. They created a roster spot Monday when they traded Jalen McDaniels, their 2031 second-round draft pick and cash considerations to the Spurs for a highly protected second-round pick.
