A pair who allegedly slipped a bag of methamphetamine into sourdough bread behind an Auburn supermarket were arrested on drug charges after a Placer County sheriff’s dog sniffed out the suspect loaf.

The Sept. 21 arrest at a north Auburn Raley’s sent the two to Placer County Jail on charges including felony possession of a controlled substance for sale and for being under the influence of a controlled substance.

Deputies and their patrol dog, Axel, were called to check on a car parked behind the supermarket in the 13300 block of Lincoln Way when the canine alerted to a sourdough loaf inside the vehicle, said sheriff’s officials.

Deputies inspected the bread and found a small stash of suspected methamphetamine inside . They also spotted signs of suspected drug sales inside the car. The two people inside the vehicle showed signs of being under the influence of a stimulant, said deputies, and were placed under arrest.
