Michigan cuts back subsidies for Ford’s largescale EV battery plant
Michigan has pulled back hundreds of millions of dollars in economic incentives for multiple Ford projects. The Michigan Strategic Fund voted to amend the subsidies Tuesday, July 9 after Ford previously scaled back its investments due to a shifting market for electric vehicles. This impacts a sprawling battery plant in Marshall and a multi-billion-dollar investment in Ford facilities across the state.
Midland Mall has big plans to upgrade children’s play area
MIDLAND, MI – Midland Mall patrons will soon have a place to let their children burn off some energy while they sit back and relax with a meal or drink from the food court. Mall owner Jordan Dice recently said crews had begun the process of redoing the shopping center’s play area for children. The new and improved play area will be stupendous – standing four stories high and with room for about 100 children.
91 DNR parcels up for auction, including waterfront properties
A range of wooded and waterfront properties throughout Michigan will be available in upcoming public land auctions, officials announced. In August and September, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources will auction off 91 parcels of vacant land better suited to private ownership. Property is available throughout the Lower and Upper peninsulas.
Flood Watch issued across wide area of Michigan as Beryl’s rain approaches
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for much of the Lower Peninsula as tropical moisture from what was once Hurricane Beryl is set to move into Michigan. The Flood Watch goes into effect Tuesday night and expires Wednesday evening. Areas in extreme southeastern Michigan are not included in the watch as less rain is forecast for those areas.

BAY CITY, MI – Pride month is extending into August in the Great Lakes Bay Region. After postponing its annual Great Lakes Bay Pride Festival due to severe weather concerns in June, the organization announced Saturday, Aug. 17, as the annual event’s new date. Round two will take place at Wenonah Park in downtown Bay City, organizers said in a news release.
Saginaw Township Police looking for strong-arm robber of local gas station
SAGINAW TWP, MI — Saginaw Township Police are hoping the public can help them identify a man who recently perpetrated a strong-arm robbery of a gas station. About 12:40 a.m. on July 2, a man walked into the Admiral station at 5605 State St. He had cash in his hand and asked the clerk for a Black & Mild cigar. The clerk fetched the item and set it on the countertop, at which point the customer launched himself horizontally across the surface, said Detective Sgt. Chad Brooks.

COVERT, MI – Federal nuclear science authorities want public opinions on what they should consider when they decide whether to allow the Palisades power plant to restart. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is accepting public comments on the environmental review process for the application to return the closed nuclear reactor in Covert Township to service in the nation’s nuclear energy fleet. Another 24-hour closure planned for 1 of Bay City’s bridges
BAY CITY, MI – One of Bay City’s four bascule bridges will be closed for a 24-hour stretch later this month as crews continue routine maintenance. Tornado confirmed from last week’s storm in Michigan’s Thumb
A severe thunderstorm last Friday, July 5 did produce a tornado in the tip of Michigan’s Thumb. The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF-0 tornado - the weakest level of tornado rating - in Huron Township in Huron County. Huron Township is located in the very northeast corner of Huron County in Michigan’s Thumb. Huron Township is situated between Port Hope and Grindstone City, along the Lake Huron shoreline.
Bay City man crashes into parked SUV, rolls vehicle during fireworks spectacular
BAY CITY, MI — About 10:25 p.m. on Saturday, July 7, shortly after fireworks began for the final night of celebrations, a 2013 Chevrolet Volt crashed into a 2024 Chevrolet Equinox parked in the 1000 block of South Wenona Avenue. Motorcyclist spotted going 110 mph before fatal crash in Northern Michigan
CHARLEVOIX COUNTY, MI – Witnesses say a Michigan man who died in a motorcycle crash was traveling approximately 110 miles per hour when the incident occurred. Michigan State Police in Gaylord responded to the scene of the three-vehicle crash, which occurred on Thumb Lake Road near Springbrook Road in Charlevoix County’s Boyne Valley Township at 9:48 p.m. on July 6.
