Opinions sought on environmental review for Palisades nuclear plant restart
COVERT, MI – Federal nuclear science authorities want public opinions on what they should consider when they decide whether to allow the Palisades power plant to restart. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is accepting public comments on the environmental review process for the application to return the closed nuclear reactor in Covert Township to service in the nation’s nuclear energy fleet. There will be a four-hour public meeting Thursday, July 11, in Benton Harbor to kick things off.
Another 24-hour closure planned for 1 of Bay City’s bridges
BAY CITY, MI – One of Bay City’s four bascule bridges will be closed for a 24-hour stretch later this month as crews continue routine maintenance. The Independence Bridge, the city’s northern most bridge, will be closed from 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, to 5 p.m. Thursday, July 18. The closure is so crews can complete a deck pour.

Tornado confirmed from last week’s storm in Michigan’s Thumb
A severe thunderstorm last Friday, July 5 did produce a tornado in the tip of Michigan’s Thumb. The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF-0 tornado - the weakest level of tornado rating - in Huron Township in Huron County. Huron Township is located in the very northeast corner of Huron County in Michigan’s Thumb. Huron Township is situated between Port Hope and Grindstone City, along the Lake Huron shoreline.
Bay City man crashes into parked SUV, rolls vehicle during fireworks spectacular
BAY CITY, MI — About 10:25 p.m. on Saturday, July 7, shortly after fireworks began for the final night of celebrations, a 2013 Chevrolet Volt crashed into a 2024 Chevrolet Equinox parked in the 1000 block of South Wenona Avenue. Motorcyclist spotted going 110 mph before fatal crash in Northern Michigan
