    With home prices and rent up dramatically since the start of the pandemic, a growing number of Americans are looking for ways to cut their monthly housing expenses.

    One common solution? Roommates .

    The rental marketplace Zillow on Thursday announced the option to search for individual room listings. A beta testing mode for the feature first launched in certain markets in November, ahead of this week's full launch, and there are already an estimated 10,000 single-room listings nationwide.

    📚 The Steinbeck House is celebrating 50 years this month, according to Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce. On Feb. 25, the chamber will host a ribbon cutting ceremony and an open house/tour to following the ceremony.

    The Queen Anne style Victorian was the birthplace and childhood home of author John Steinbeck. Built in 1897, the Steinbeck family moved into the house in 1900. The home was opened to the public as a restaurant on Feb. 27, 1974.

    🚓 Salinas may be getting closer to hiring a new police chief, KION reported Tuesday . According to Open Vallejo , Interim Vallejo Police Chief Jason Ta could become the next Salinas Police Chief. The report says that Ta has accepted the position with Salinas Police and will be stepping down from his role in Vallejo.

    Salinas city officials have yet to confirm the hire.

    🗳️ Gov. Gavin Newsom is urging California voters to approve a ballot initiative that he says is needed to tackle the state’s homelessness crisis , a change social providers say would threaten programs that keep people from becoming homeless in the first place.

    In 2004, voters approved legislation that imposed a tax on millionaires to finance mental health services, generating $2 billion to $3 billion in revenue each year that has mostly gone to counties to fund mental health programs as they see fit under broad guidelines.

    🧗🏼A massive landslide on a coastal bluff has left a Southern California mansion on the edge of a cliff, but authorities have determined that the ocean-view home and neighboring residences are not in immediate danger.

    The slide occurred last week in the city of Dana Point after back-to-back drenching storms .

    The city’s building inspector assessed the residential structures and a geotechnical engineer observed the slide site, the city said in a statement Wednesday.
