Salinas officials announced on Monday that work will soon commence on land where a 3-million-square-foot Amazon distribution warehouse is proposed for Harris Road in the southerly end of the city.

The five-story Amazon advanced robotics fulfillment facility is the first development project of the Salinas Ag-Industrial Center Specific Plan, and thus responsible for constructing all backbone infrastructure necessary to support the entire 257-acre plan area.

The Salinas Ag-Industrial Center Specific Plan was approved by city council in 2010.

The cost of backbone infrastructure required to support Phase 1 and Phase 2 development in the plan area is over $69 million, according to the city's announcement. The city expects the multi-phase Amazon project to take years to complete.

A list of off-site work in support of the proposed Amazon facility to begin as early as this month, include:

    • Abbott Street: Widening to a 96-foot major arterial section
    • Harris Road: 65 feet – 81 feet signal improvements and road improvements including undergrounding utilities
    • New sewer, water and storm drain lines installed on Harris with trunk extensions for future use
    • Installation of new domestic well site and expanded water distribution lines
    • Dayton Street: Extended 1400+ feet as a two-lane street to intersect with “A Street” (one of the new streets that will run through the project site)
    • Highway 101 at Abbott Street: Installation of a ramp metering signal on the southbound onramp to control traffic entering the highway
