UP nails down berth in win over Southern

Union Pines tennis nailed down the top 3A spot in the Sandhills Athletic Conference Tuesday evening, as the Lady Vikings played host to Southern Lee and completed a season sweep of the Lady Cavaliers with an 8-1 win.

The two teams have been 1-2 in the 3A half of the SAC every season of the conference’s existence, and Union Pines beat Southern 7-2 earlier this season when the teams met in Sanford. No one expected much different this time around, but Union Pines still needed the victory to ensure its dual-team playoff trip and opening-round home match.
