    Just two days after the Apalachee High School shooting in Georgia, another gun-related incident happened at Joppatowne High School in Maryland. The Harford County Sheriff’s Office officially identified the 16-year-old shooting suspect as Jaylen Rushawn Prince in their press release .

    Here’s What Happened At Joppatowne High School & Details About The Shooter

    The shooting at the Harford County, Maryland, school left 15-year-old Warren Curtis Grant dead, and authorities have taken Prince into custody.

    The New York Times reports that the incident occurred shortly after noon on Friday, September 6, in a restroom at Joppatowne High School. Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler said the school resource officer and principal broke up a fight in the bathroom.

    Per Fox Baltimore , Prince shot Warren Curtis Grant with a single round. Prince eventually fled the school, but police later captured him. WBALTV reported that police quickly found the 16-year-old at an apartment, but they haven’t recovered the weapon.

    School nurses treated William Curtis Grant before airlifting him to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. However, doctors pronounced Grant dead after the transfer.

    Sheriff Jeff Gahler told the New York Times he felt disappointed, especially after the recent tragedy at Apalachee High School.

    “We’re all familiar with the horrible shooting that took four lives in Georgia just a couple days ago and here we stand in Harford County with a school shooting,” Gahler explained.

    The Latest Update & Details About The Suspected Shooter

    The Harford County Sheriff’s Office press release says citizens called the Emergency Operations Center to report a suspicious person trying to break into a home. Deputies arrived quickly and arrested Jaylen Rushawn Prince at around 12:50 p.m.

    The press release confirms that Prince faces adult charges for murder, first and second-degree assault, and using a firearm during a violent felony.

    Investigators are still looking into the events leading up to the incident and the connection between Prince and Grant, but it’s confirmed that the two knew each other before the shooting.

    The Harford Sheriff’s Office announced that no additional suspects remain, and there are no ongoing threats to the community or Joppatowne High School.

    Joppatowne High School is located in Harford County, Maryland, approximately 20 miles northeast of Baltimore. The New York Times notes that the high school usually enrolls around 985 students.

    Harford County Public Schools Superintendent Sean Bulson called the event at Joppatowne High School deeply upsetting and expressed his heartbreak for the victim’s family.

    “Our hearts are breaking for the victim and the victim’s family, the circumstances are absolutely terrible, and this should not be happening in schools,” Bulson said.

    Sheriff Gahler mentioned that authorities have interacted with Prince in over ten incidents since 2022, and they are currently still diligently pursuing their investigation.
