ASHLAND – An Ashland man is facing charges after police say he broke into a police officer’s home and was promptly held at gunpoint.

Chris Sheppard, 53, of 207 North 9th Street, is facing felony burglary and criminal trespassing charges among other misdemeanors for the break-in Tuesday morning.

According to the criminal complaint filed by Ashland Police Chief Gerard Daley, the chief received a cell phone call around 8:30am Tuesday from a frantic Patrolman Daniel Weikel reporting he had someone at gunpoint in his kitchen.

Daley responded and found a man facing the wall, wedged behind an oven.

The man, identified as Sheppard, was taken into custody.

Weikel told Daley he had come downstairs and saw glass all over the living room. When he went to his kitchen to open the back door, he heard another man say “Hey.” That man, Sheppard, was promptly held at gunpoint.

Sheppard, Weikel reported, was wielding two large kitchen knives, which he dropped behind the oven once at gunpoint.

Sheppard told Daley that people were after him, he had been shot, and he was running to get away from them.

Because of that, he dove through Weikel’s window.

Sheppard’s girlfriend said none of that was true, that Sheppard had run out the door with just his pants on and she had no idea where he had gone, according to court documents.

Sheppard was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital – Schuylkill – East Norwegian Street for a mental health evaluation.

He will be arraigned once released from the hospital.

He is facing felony burglary, criminal trespass, misdemeanor possession of instruments of crime, and criminal mischief.
