STOCKTON – One person was killed in an accident at a coal processing facility near Hazleton Thursday.

Hazle Township firefighters were called to 414 Stockton Mountain Road for a technical rescue just before 10pm.

There, someone was trapped under a ton of coal in coal processing station.

Additional assistance was requested from the City of Hazleton to free the victim.

The victim, who has not yet been identified, succumbed to their injuries.

Firefighters were on scene for about three hours.

State Police and the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration are investigating.

MSHA said the incident happened at Atlantic Carbon’s Hazleton Shaft mine and was a “powered haulage” accident.
