Electric Amazon truck rolls out in northern Schuylkill

SHENANDOAH – There isn’t a single public electric vehicle charger in the Shenandoah Valley, but your next Amazon package could come from an electric delivery van.

The e-commerce giant has been rolling out custom-built Rivian vans since the summer of 2022, as part of an aim to achieve net-zero carbon by 2040.

Their hope is to have 100,000 of the futuristic, if not strange looking, vans on the road by 2030.

The Sentinel spotted one heading up West Centre Street in Shenandoah Monday afternoon. It was also seen last week in Mahanoy City.

Amazon’s website says the nearest city to Shenandoah that they have been deployed is Philadelphia, and the van seen in Shenandoah had an out-of-state temporary tag.

The webpage also says that the trucks have “embedded technology that fully integrates the delivery workflow with the vehicle,” and a “safety-first design focused on superior 360-degree visibility, and vehicle features that protect drivers and pedestrians.”
