SALEM TOWNSHIP, Luzerne County – This Thursday, the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station will sound its sirens as part of a test of its system.

The test will be held Thursday at 11am and all sirens within a 10 mile radius of the nuclear plant will sound for about three minutes.

That radius stretches into the northern reaches of the Sentinel ‘s coverage area in the Weston area.

After the sirens sound, local emergency alert system radio and television stations will carry a message about the system.

Residents may also receive calls on the landline and cell phones as well. No action is required and the public is reminded that the sirens are not a signal to evacuate, but a way to alert people to tune in to an Emergency Alert System radio or TV station for information and instructions. TV stations include WNEP, WBRE, WYOU, and WYLN.

In the event of an evacuation, the Mahanoy Area School District is a reception center.
