Quick action with extinguisher saves lives in Ashland house fire

ASHLAND – Three people were taken to the hospital after a house fire here and a resident’s quick action with a fire extinguisher is credited with saving their lives.

Firefighters were called to 939 Brock Street in Ashland around 8:30 p.m. for a reported house fire with entrapment.

Ashland Fire Chief Phil Groody said the fire broke out in the kitchen. He said four people lived in the home along with someone visiting.

One of the residents was upstairs, felt the heat from the fire and found the kitchen aflame.

“His instinct, he took that extinguisher and knocked it down. Thank God he did,” Groody told the Sentinel . “That fire extinguisher saved all of their lives and saved that house from burning down.

Three of the residents were taken to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. The other two are staying at a neighbor’s house for the night and the Red Cross will assist the family Tuesday.

The fire, Groody said, was an accidental kitchen fire.

Firefighters from Ashland, Girardville, and Lavelle were at the scene along with EMS from Ashland and Shenandoah.
