Blue Devils soccer squad embarks on sophomore season Saturday

SHENANDOAH – With much of the inaugural team intact, the Shenandoah Valley Blue Devils open their sophomore season at Veterans Memorial Stadium Saturday morning.

The Devils host the Tigers of Southern Columbia at 10am.

Coached by John Burke, the Devils went 8-7 — a record that would have qualified them for district playoffs had they been eligible.

They are eligible this year and are now part of the Schuylkill League’s Division 2.

Only two players were lost from last year’s team — Brad Monjaraz and Victor Valazquez — while they’ve gained seven new players.

Captains this year are seniors Ayden Zamudio, Johnny Burke, and Dante Garcia.

Eleven seniors are on the team with Burke and Dante Garcia in the backfield and “an explosive midfield led by senior Joan Menjivar and juniors Antonio Ruiz and Kevin Gasca.”

Up front, the Devils are led by senior Ayden Zamudio and sophomore Sam Mentusky.
