In 2023, the Sky were able to make a playoff appearance under interim coach Emre Vatansever even without their two star rookies, Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, and Most Improved Player of the Year candidate Chennedy Carter. One of the biggest issues Chicago faced in its only season under Weatherspoon was offensive efficiency, averaging the second-least points per game (77.4) on the second-worst efficiency (44.2%). The defense wasn't much better, falling in the bottom half in points allowed per contest (82.5). Following the news, many fans were wondering when the Indiana Fever would fire their own head coach, Christie Sides. Some have been calling for her <a href="https://athlonsports.com/wnba/indiana-fever/calls-mount-for-christie-sides-firing-after-caitlin-clark-decision-in-fever-wings" rel="nofollow"> dismissal </a> throughout the year, but her season results should keep her safe as she improved the Fever's win count by seven from 2023 (13-27) to 2024 (20-20) and led them to their first playoff appearance since 2016. Still, following Weatherspoon's dismissal, WNBA fans were quick to call for Indiana to get rid of Sides.
