A corrections officer has been charged with possessing an illicit substance at the Maury Correctional Institution.

The Greene County Sheriff’s Office announced that investigators on Aug. 1 arrested Destiny Griggs, 24, of Pitt County at the prison.

Griggs, who was then employed as a corrections officer, was searched about 7:30 a.m. by other officers who discovered K2 in her possession.

According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, K2 is a synthetic drug designed to mimic THC, the main psychoactive ingredient of marijuana.

Prison officials contacted the sheriff’s office who charged Griggs with possession of controlled substance on prison premises.

She was booked into the Greene County Detention Center under a $5,000 secured bond. She is no longer employed by the prison.

    Toy used in robbery

Snow Hill police said officers recovered a toy firearm as they tracked a suspect in a robbery at the Speedway on Aug. 23.

About 3:20 a.m., Snow Hill Police Department officers were dispatched to the gas station at 1102 Kingold Blvd., the department said. Greene County Sheriff’s Office deputies also responded to the scene.

At the store, a clerk told police a black male in a black hooded sweatshirt and mask entered the store and demanded money. Police said that the suspect took the cash register drawer and left the scene on foot.

A Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office K9 unit was called to assist and led officers northwest before a dog ended its track in the area of Gregory Avenue, which connects Kingold Boulevard and Southeast Third Street, police said.

The register drawer was recovered during the track along with a black toy gun. Police said that the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information was asked to contact the department at 560-9022 or shpd@snowhillnc.com.

Gunfire struck a home on Allen Drive and two homes on Wilson in addition to several vehicles.

On Thursday the Ayden Police Department said warrants had been obtained for Nazion Zyiere Williams, 18, of 312 Allen Drive. Officers searched his residence on Aug. 1, police said, but he was not at the home.
