    Watermelon Festival

    The Winterville Watermelon Festival will be held through Sunday at the Winterville Recreation Park, 332 Sylvania St. The annual event includes carnival rides, a parade, a watermelon-eating contest, food and games. The Watermelon Jam, a ticketed event, will be held from 5-10 p.m. today and will feature Grand Funk Railroad. Visit watermelonfest.com.

    Fall mum sale

    The Greene Central High School Future Farmers of America is hosting its annual mum sale. Pre-orders are due by Sept. 3 and the pick-up date in Sept. 23. Mums are available in 8-inch, 10-inch and 12-inch pots. Color options are yellow, burgundy, bronze, purple and white. Cost ranges from $5 to $20. All other orders must be picked up from 3-6 p.m. on Sept. 23 at Greene Central High School, 140 School Drive, Snow Hill.

    Coffee with a Cop

    The Pitt County Sheriff’s Department will host Coffee with a Cop from 9-11:30 a.m. on Sept. 10 at Coopers Cup, 2588 Railroad St., Winterville. This will be a chance for residents to discuss concerns with Sheriff Paula Dance and deputies. For more information, call 830-4141 or visit www.pittcountysheriff.com.

    Farmville fall sports

    Farmville Parks and Recreation has announced fall sports registration is open. Youth may participate in soccer, tee-ball, softball, baseball, flag football and basketball.     Sports registration

    Greene County is offering online registration for Park and Recreation programs. County residents can now sign up and pay for youth sports online. Visit greenecountync.gov/online-sport-registration/.

    Pierce-Spilman Fellowship

    The Pitt County Democratic Party is hosting the 102nd anniversary Pierce-Spilman Fellowship from 4-7 p.m. on Sept. 6 in Fountain. The event featuers state and local party officers, candidates and an evening of fellowship and food.     Job Fair

    A Greene County Job Fair will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Greene County Wellness Center, 84 N. Perry Drive, Snow Hill. The event is sponsored by Lenoir Community College and is open to the public. Local employers will be accepting applications and conducting interviews.     Widows luncheon

    Faith Assembly Church Widow’s/Divorced Ministry is hosting a free Widows Empowering Widows luncheon from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 14 at Rustic Rose Hall at Homeplace Events Venue, 3815 Emma Cannon Road, Ayden.     John Lawson Legacy Days

    John Lawson Legacy Days will take place Oct. 18-19 at Grifton Historical Museum and Indian Village, 437A Creekshore Drive. Friday’s event runs from 5-9 p.m. and features night cannon firing, storytelling, camp food and entertainment. On Saturday, events run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be cannon firings throughout the day, history presentations, demonstrations and exhibitors inside and outside the museum.     Policing and utility forum

    The Town of Ayden will host a Community Policing and Utility Forum at 6 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Ayden Community Building, 548 Second St. Residents are invited learn about electric, water, and sewer rates and how city police are working to keep Ayden safe. There will be an opportunity for those attending to ask questions.

    Nature Saturdays

    The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at Contentnea Creek, 949 Contentnea Lane, Grifton, hosts Nature Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. During this time, the park’s trails and play areas are open for visitors to explore. Visit atimeforscience.org.

    Farmers Market

    Health Talks

    Health Talks with Jennifer Lane, health educator with the Greene County Department of Public Health, are at 11 a.m. every third Thursday at the Greene County Senior Center, 104 Greeneridge Road. They are free and open to Greene County Residents. Call 252-747-5436.

    Farmville Senior Council

    The Farmville Senior Council meets the third Wednesday of the month at the Farmville Public Library, 4276 W. Church St. Meetings start at 1 p.m. either in-person or via Zoom. For more information or to attend online send an email to farmvilleseniorcouncil@gmail.com.

    Hospice volunteers

    3HC is seeking volunteers for its hospice program. Volunteers provide support to caregivers, offer companionship to patients and take part in meaningful activities. They also can offer spiritual support, administrative and clerical support, take part in special events and fundraising activities and assist the Wings Program for Grieving Children or the Veterans to Veteran program. Residents of Greene, Pitt, Beaufort or Lenoir counties who would like to spend time with patients and their families in need can email volunteer coordinator Nena Ellis at nellis@3hc.org.

    Give blood

    The American Red Cross Donation Center, 700 Cromwell Drive, is open from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday-Sunday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday. Visit www.redcross.org or call 758-1140 or 1-800-733-2767 to make appointments at the center or at blood drives coming up at the following locations.

    Animal adoptions

    The Humane Society of Eastern Carolina, 3520 Tupper Drive, is open by appointment only from 1-5 p.m. Thursday-Friday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday.     The Greene County Animal Shelter, 1985 N.C. 903 North, Snow Hill, is open 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.     Garden tours

    The Pitt County Arboretum will host garden tours from noon to 1 p.m. on the second Friday of each month. The Northside Plant Walks utilize the arboretum and the Northside Walking Trail to tell a story about the plants with each tour. Attendance is free but visitors should pre-register for each event at pitt.ces.ncsu.edu/the-pitt-county-arboretum/northside-plant-walks/. Planned walks include:

    Family Chess Club

    The Family Chess Club meets from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at Apt To Learn, 650 E. Fire Tower Road, Suite B, Winterville. Chess lectures will be from 6-7 p.m. Chess sets are provided. All levels of players are welcome. The club is an affiliate of the United States Chess Federation and conducts sanctioned chess tournaments on occasion.     Project Fan

    The Pitt County Council on Aging is providing free fans to individuals older than 60 who have no air conditioning or are unable to afford utilities, have not received a fan from the COA in the last two years and can present a photo ID. Call 752-1717, Ext. 206.
