From watching goal posts to watching hockey in Utah

There is a lot going on and only so many column inches available so we’re going to bounce around a bit. Hang in and I think it will be worth your time.

Imagine you were in downtown Nashville, having a good time as people in downtown Nashville often do, and you walk out of whatever drinking establishment you happen to be in to see thousands of college football fans carrying a field goal post through the street towards the water. It must have been so confusing.

First of all, it’s Nashville. They historically don’t care that much about football, largely because they are home to Vanderbilt University. They care about baseball. Secondly, they were playing Alabama that day. It’s been decades since Vandy won that game.

Credit to Alabama football though. Nobody tears down the field goal post when they beat North Carolina. I’ve seen fans storm the court after beating UNC in basketball, but nobody gets that excited about beating my beloved Tar Heels in football. It is a credit to the Alabama football program.

I cannot imagine the mental rollercoaster involved with Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer beating Georgia and then some fans calling for his firing a week later. He didn’t forget how to coach football but he was never Nick Saban to begin with and I hope they know that nobody is.

Tough week to be former Jets coach Robert Saleh too. He got fired this week because Aaron Rodgers isn’t Tom Brady.

I’m not saying that Robert Salah is the greatest coach in the world, but I don’t think he’s the biggest problem with the New York Jets. They bet the franchise on an old quarterback who is playing like a quarterback in decline. Tom Brady is the exception folks, we can’t expect other quarterbacks to play well into their forties.

I’m going to sound like a lot of University of North Carolina and Miami Dolphins football fans when I remind you that basketball season is now starting. I’m not done watching football, but most of my enjoyment of it has ended so basketball is giving me something sports related I can look forward to.

There is apparently a Netflix documentary style show called the starting five with LeBron James, Jayson Tatum, Jimmy Butler, Anthony Edwards and Domantas Sabonis. A 13-year-old me would’ve been super excited for a show like this about some of the NBA’s best talents.

The 48-year-old me knows that these men are very good at controlling what people can see, with the exception, of course, of Jimmy Butler. To clarify, he has as much control over what people can see but doesn’t seem to care as much. Watching and hearing Jimmy Butler off the court may turn out to be very entertaining this year.

If I offered you a million dollars, could you tell me who got picked first in the NBA draft this year? For the record, I am not offering any money so if you can, good for you.

I couldn’t however, and that’s very unusual for me. NBA stars are playing longer than ever before and there doesn’t seem to be as much desire for new and young stars.

Maybe you’re over the NBA but are still a suffering football fan like me. For you, I’ll remind you that hockey has returned as well. While I’m asking questions, did you know Utah has an NHL franchise now? They have great colors, but I cannot imagine a less interesting place to go see my favorite team play.

People in Utah are excited though so I guess that’s all that matters. To them I say, Go Canes!
