Matthew Stevens: Nesting bees are important pollinators and aren't aggressive
Though I normally write about plants, there are many insects we encounter as we are outside gardening. Some can be problematic for our plants, but most are non-pests and many are beneficial. Everyone knows about honey bees, but less well understood are ground nesting bees such as miner bees. Miner bees are active for a few weeks in early spring and are out and about now. Miner bees live in...
Mitchell Oakley: Leaders must change attitude toward law enforcement
Remember when Democrats supported a “Defund the Police” slogan? Or, when other groups marched against police with a rallying cry of “pigs in a blanket, fry ’em like bacon?” Guess what folks? All that negativity has become a burden to police across the country. It is responsible for the way police are being treated today, where deadly assaults against officers have seemingly become routine. I’m the first to know that...
Celia Stone: Week after Easter is bright time for Christians
Bright Week or Pascha Week is the name the Eastern Orthodox use in reference to the week starting on Easter Sunday and ending the Saturday six days later. Orthodox Christians set aside those seven days to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus in a tremendously meaningful way. At the Council of Trullo in A.D. 692, church fathers wrote in Canon 66 that, “From the holy day of the Resurrection of Christ our God until the next Lord’s Day, for a whole week, in the holy churches...
J.M. Biggs: Acknowledge God in all that you do
I want everyone to understand the reason why I am speaking about heaven again. A lot of people, especially Christians, are in love with this world. The church is not crucifying their flesh every day. The Bible tells us we must die daily of the things of this world. Then too, a lot of the church has everything backward. We worship the Lord on Sunday and believe it’s our time...

The Service is proposing to remove the fish from the endangered species list. The Roanoke logperch, or Percina rex, is known as the king of the darters because of its size relative to others in the family. These fish grow to six inches long, on average, have strongly patterned fins and can...

When Jones grew up and opened her own dance academy in Greenville, she staged her first production here at the theater on Farmville’s Main Street. Two decades later, she is back as director of the hit musical “Dreamgirls,” which opened Thursday. The Tony Award-winning play, which opened on Broadway in 1981, follows...
More important than ever to not show partiality
My best friend is a Duke fan. He worships a blue devil and I still love him like a brother. It’s not always easy but he’s married to an N.C. State fan so I know his suffering is greater than mine. He texts me while watching the Duke versus UConn women’s basketball game and expresses his disappointment that the announcer, not someone in studio providing analysis from another state, but the person actually calling the game, expressed her desire to see a UConn and Southern...

Matthew Stevens: Baptisia is desirable plant in many garden settings
When I was first learning about plants as a teenager while working at a garden center in Massachusetts, one of the first plants that really grabbed my attention was lupine. I loved the tall flower stalks, but I especially loved the way drops of water would collect in the center of their palmate leaves after watering or rainfall. Lupines are seldom seen in the South, as they fare better in colder climates to the north and west. ...
J.M. Biggs: Jesus is coming; churches must wake up
I have spoken over and over again, saying that Jesus is coming really soon. Many of us have loved ones who are not saved yet. Shall we just let them perish? Remember, every one of us has a certain number of souls to reach for Christ. Because of our slowfulness and disobedience, a lot of people are dying in their sin. As I have said before, we must constantly work...
