PCC mourns former President Charles E. Russell
WINTERVILLE — In Pitt Community College’s 63-year history, only five people have served as its president. One of them was Dr. Charles E. Russell — and he was truly one of a kind. Russell — better known to friends and colleagues as “Charlie” — passed away March 6 at age 85, leaving behind a wife, Lorraine, and a legacy of leadership, vision and passion that helped turn PCC into one of the state’s largest and most comprehensive community colleges. ...
Celia Stone: Remember the message of St. Patrick
Every year, March 17 marks Saint Patrick’s Day, a religious and cultural holiday. Patrick was born in Britain, possibly in what is now Dumbarton, Scotland. At the age of 16 he was taken prisoner by a group of Irish raiders who attacked his family’s estate and transported him to Ireland as a slave. Patrick spent six years in captivity, working as a shepherd. With long, lonely hours away from people, he turned to the faith of his grandfather for solace and became a devout Christian....
J.M. Biggs: Evaluate your life to get ready for the rapture
If there has ever been a time to deny ourselves, pick up the cross and follow Jesus, it is right now. I keep getting warnings of the times we are living in. I am instructed to warn the church and the world of the immediate coming of the Lord. A demonic and seducing spirit has convinced everyone that Jesus is not coming, or not coming right now. All the signs are all around us. Our mission (the church) should be all about winning souls and...

High school basketball: Two teams vying for state championships Saturday
No matter what happens in Saturday's 2A boys' basketball state championship game, it was a fitting end to the season. That's because of all the teams across the state, it would have been hard to find a more compelling title game pairing than Farmville Central and Reidsville. Each team has dealt the other its most recent loss, albeit quite some time ago in both cases. It is not only a...

March musicals: Month filled with theater for young audiences
With tournament champions being crowned and brackets being decided, the stage is set for March Madness. But for those who enjoy the rising of the curtain as much as the running on the court, there are some March musicals on the calendar as well. Several productions for young audiences are scheduled to play out this month, with four different shows over the next two weekends. ‘Annie Jr.’ ...
Handmade history: Ayden quilter working to preserve craft
AYDEN — For months, people have showed up six days a week at the home of George Snyder III to help with grandmother’s flower garden. Thirty volunteers have spent about 500 hours ensuring each blossom is a thing of beauty. But this labor-intensive undertaking did not require rakes, shovels or a patch of land. Instead, needle and thread have created this patchwork pattern that is pieced and quilted by hand. This fabric feat will be featured at Saturday’s National Quilting Day event at the Ayden...

Tournament time brings good memories
As I write this, it is college basketball conference tournament week. There are dozens of conferences with hundreds of college and university teams across the country competing for regional championships, an opportunity to play for a national title and bragging rights. Here in North Carolina, that translates to ACC tournament time and, while that doesn’t carry the gravitas it used to, it still means an awful lot to many of us - especially those of us old enough to remember how it used to be,...

Art ambassadors: Downeast Sculpture Exhibition brings public art to local communities
AYDEN — The spinning silver object situated on the front lawn of Town Hall is not a wind turbine, but it is generating conversation.
