High school basketball: Rams hang on for sweep of Chargers
LITTLEFIELD — The emergence of Greene Central’s Jalin Sutton couldn’t have come at a much better time for the Rams on Feb. 2. High school basketball: Falcons swoop early, complete sweep of Rampants
No chance. Lofty and gaudy in statistics and reputation, South Central yielded no opportunity for upset-minded J.H. Rose on Jan. 31, slashing to a 71-53 triumph. The Big Carolina Conference boys’ high school basketball skirmish of Pitt County rivals was decided quickly and decisively, the Falcons’ defense scorching with takeaways and impenetrably blunt-force toughness around the lane. Celia Stone: Jesus is exact representation of God's nature
Hebrews, the New Testament epistle written to a first-century congregation of Jewish Christians in the Roman Empire, stands as a pillar of Christian theology. In the first four verses, the author gets right to the heart of questions about Jesus. “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world....
J.M. Biggs: We must start winning souls for Christ
As we are living in the last of the last days, this world is in a state of emergency. Before 2024 is over, on average, at least 2.5 million people will leave this earth in death worldwide. The question that I ask is where will their souls end up? There are only two choices. There is heaven, where there will be everlasting love and goodness. Then there is hell, where...
Mitchell Oakley: Loss of local journalism spells trouble for everyone
News deserts. Have you heard of them? News deserts are communities without a local newspaper covering everyday issues. Deserts are created by newspaper closings as well as newspapers that aren’t as financially fit as they once were. Poynter.com reported in 2022 that some 2,500 newspapers have closed since 2004. The report was issued by Penny Abernathy on local news in America. In the fifth edition of her report, it was...

Intrigue from the Super Bowl to the All-Star game
I have too many thoughts and topics bouncing around in my brain to only expound on one. This week I’m going to write a little about a lot. I’m old enough to remember Mike Shanahan and Ed McCaffrey winning three Super Bowls together. They won a Super Bowl in San Francisco and two in Denver with Shanahan coaching and McCaffrey playing receiver. Their sons are now in San Francisco -...

Consider immigration in context of human kindness
Consider immigration in context of human kindness What are the causes of all the hate, divisiveness, anger and violence that seems to be permeating so much of society here and around the world? It may, in fact, not be any worse than it’s ever been, but why? Why would one human being raise a hand against another? At our core, we are all the same. Our races and ethnicities might...
Thomas Knapp: Texas has a Constitutional case, not a moral one
On Jan. 22, a 5-4 US Supreme Court vote allowed U.S. Border Patrol agents to cut razor wire installed along the U.S.-Mexico border (which also happens to be the Texas-Mexico Border) in the vicinity of a local park that the Texas Military Department seized earlier in the month. Eagle Park verges on the Rio Grande river, and the idea of the razor wire is to deter (or injure or kill) migrants crossing from the Mexican side. ...
